I had just hit this roadblock in my game, and I've become to overcome it. First of all, a HUGE tip for people who watch replays to get a feel for the economy: DO NOT watch the beginning in fast speed! Keep it at standard 1:1 speed, because if you get a feel for the economy at a faster pace, you get thrown off when trying it in your game. For a while I was always thinking, "Wow, at this stage I should already be at T2 with 6 land factories and an assisted air factory!"
Yeah, cuz the times are different..
Next, put engineers in your repeat build order in factories, so as they come out, you gain more building power, which is required as your eco builds over time. Don't get caught at T2 with 6 T1 engineers.
Reclaim, reclaim, reclaim! On maps with tons of trees and crap, always set your extra engineers to attack move the forests.
Set 2 engineers to speed-build power generators once you have most of your mex spots filled up. Once you get a few smaller rows of power gens, you can continue to que them up while you get another engineer to start mass fab farms. Make sure you have air superiority though or you'll get them all bombed easily, also why you wait until mid-game before you start that one.
Begin upgrading MEXs one at a time at about the 3-5 minute mark, depending on the map (smaller maps you have to wait a bit longer I find since you have less mass).
Feel like you are shy on resources, and you desparately need to get something built at a fast speed? PAUSE THINGS! Almost everything can be paused or turned off, like radar stations, mass fabs, and factories!
That's it for now, I'll think of some more later, or you guys can ask some specific questions.
