I usually build factories around mass extractors and fill up with power gens, leaving 1 side open (don't know if it matters) and mass storage next to mass extractors gives extra mass.
Ussually to avoid being bombed to death because of fabs exploding in my base i build a little field, containing rows of power gens and mass fabs, a bit outside my base
